Arkansas ASCD position on Educational Issues at the Federal Level

  • Provide as much notice as possible should any cuts be forthcoming in the areas of Title I, Title IIA, VIB or Title III.  These programs support the work of many school districts in significant ways.  At a minimum, should cuts be forthcoming, please consider relief from some of the regulations that also impact how funds are used.

  • Strive to reach a bipartisan agreement on the reauthorization of Elementary and Secondary Education Act, also known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB).  This law is in direct competition with our ability to move into the adoption of the Common Core.  The curriculum that we are putting into place is not coherent with current assessment as approved by NCLB.  We desire to move fully into Common Core, so we need relief from the competing systems found within NCLB.

  • Return educational practice to the state of Arkansas with minimal intervention or direction from the federal government.  This work is closely tied to the discussion of the federal government’s role as it is linked to the reauthorization of NCLB.  States have recognized the need to better prepare students through the Common Core consortia, such as the PARCC consortium.  Arkansas has chosen to participate in rigorous curriculum with “next generation” assessments so that our state’s students can compete globally.
