Arkansas ASCD Legislative Committee
Working for the Organization during the 87th Session of the Arkansas General Assembly

The following members of the AASCD Board of Directors work as the Legislative Committee for the organization reviewing bills, meeting with legislators and presenting testimony and providing briefing papers on issues related to curriculum, instruction, assessment and leadership. This committee meets each Wednesday immediately following the AAEA Legislative committee meetings held at the AAA Building in North Little Rock. AASCD members should contact the legislative committee members with comments and/or concerns regarding legislation during the session. Arkansas ASCD advocates for what is best in meeting the needs of the “whole child”.

Legislative Update

HR 1013 (Rainey) RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE ARKANSAS WHOLE CHILD INITIATIVE

This Resolution is on the House Education Committee Agenda. It is sponsored by Rep. David Rainey, Dumas). Rep. Rainey is a former Arkansas ASCD President, ASCD Board member at the national level, and current member of Arkansas ASCD. His resolution support the ASCD Whole Child Initiative.

Arkansas ASCD will have a day at the Capitol on Februarys 12, 2009, when Rep. Rainey presents his resolution to the House Education Committee.

HB 1034 (Cook) AN ACT TO STRENGTHEN ARKANSAS EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

This Bill passed the House Education Committee and is on the agenda for the Senate Education Committee

This bill establishes an Educational Leadership Advisory Council and continues the support of the ALA school support program.

Arkansas ASCD is included in Section 1 of this bill where the Executive Director of Arkansas ASCD shall be a member of the Educational Leadership Advisory Council.

Arkansas ASCD is dedicated to supporting legislation that meets the need of the whole child as we focus on improved learning for all students. Please review the issues listed below. If you have comments, contact a member of the Arkansas ASCD legislative committee or an Arkansas ASCD Board Member.

  1. Encourage the support of a resolution supporting decision making to support the ASCD “Whole Child Initiative” (See position paper under Advocacy on this web site for more information)
  2. Support Revision in Act 35 to include student growth model
  3. Support the 60 hours of professional development; oppose any effort to reduce the 60 hours. (See position paper Under Advocacy on this web site for more information)
  4. Support Job Embedded Professional Development
  5. Under study are issues of AP and Concurrent Credit
